John Lowe Southall was born around 1807 in Dudley, Worcestershire.

In 1851 he was a publican at 'THE HARE AND GREYHOUND' 36/37 Commercial Street, and was there until at least 1859. (1851 Census, 1852 Scammell Directory, 1859 Slater's Directory.)

In 1861 he was innkeeper at the 'ISCA INN' Clarence Place. (1861 Census.)

In 1871 he was hotel keeper at the 'QUEENS HOTEL' Baneswell Square. (1871 Census, 1871 PO Directory.)

In 1881 He was living at 1 East Usk Road and was a farmer of 10 acres. His son, Albert Emanuel Southall, was a brewer's clerk. (1881 Census.)

He died 13th June 1885. His probate record showed he was living at East Usk Road.
